Processing Dialog
In general, no explicit operating steps need be taken to commit stock to an order. The WDLS programming will commit the stock as part of the processing when a pick sheet or bill of lading is requested for the order. For explicit information on how stock is selected for commitment refer to the inventory management manual.
Pick Sheets and Bills of Lading
From the "Work With Orders" panel, use the "Pick Sheet" option to commit stock and produce a pick sheet. Use the "Print BoL" option to produce a bill of lading. When the option is taken, the status of the order will typically change to 'SP' (Submitted Pick) or 'SB' (Submitted Bill) respectively unless this is a re-print. Separate jobs are submitted to commit the stock and produce the paperwork. If one or more of the items is short in inventory, the status will change to 'EP' (Error Pick) or 'EB' (Error Bill). Other picking processes, such as batch picking, perform a similar function.
As order details are committed, the status of the order line is changed to 'CM' for committed. Any line where insufficient stock was determined is set to a status of 'NS' for no stock. If you place the "Order Details" option next to an order you can see the status at the end of each detail line on the "Work With Order Details" panel. During stock commitment processing, if more than one lot code or location is required to fill the quantity, the detail will be split into two or more lines.
Explicit Stock Commitment
A separate option exists on the "Work With Order Details" to commit stock to a particular line item. This option can be used to reserve stock for a particular order; however, you should understand that this not only reserves the stock it locks stock from a particular lot and location to the order. If there is a time delay before the order is shipped this can result in inefficient warehouse operation, as other picking processes will pick around this committed stock.
De-committing Stock
Sometimes due to timing, stock may have already been committed to an order that can be delayed while a rush order must be processed. The "De-Commit" option on the "Work With Order Details" panel can be taken to release the inventory. The released line will then have to be cut or re-committed once inventory becomes available to fill the order.
Forcing Stock Negative
Occasionally there will not be enough available stock to fill one or more of the lines on the order, resulting in an error pick or error bill status. A WDLS option is available to force the inventory negative. This option may or may not be enabled based upon your account setup. Its use can allow you to produce pick sheets for pulling the balance of the order. Shipment confirmations options should be set to prevent you from shipping the order until the actual stock is identified.
Options can be taken either at the order level or on a particular line level to force the stock. When this is done an "In Transit" location and/or lot is created as needed in the WDLS inventory module and driven negative. When new stock is received, at least a portion will have to be received or adjusted into this lot/location to clear the negative condition.
All these options present no additional panels for processing. Successful processing or insufficient stock conditions are reflected in the status codes on the order header or detail lines. The result of any of these actions can also be immediately seen on the stock status inquiry and other inquiries and reports in the system.
